After months of offensive outbursts, from mocking a disabled reporter to suggesting a judge was biased against him because of his Mexican heritage, Donald Trump has crossed yet another line. And this time, he may have gone too far even for the Republicans who nominated him: he insulted parents who lost a child to war. But the Internet wasn’t about to let that slide.

Last week, at the Democratic convention, Khizr Khan, whose son Capt. Humayun Khan was killed in Iraq in 2004, gave a powerful speech. Khan, a Muslim from Pakistan who became an American citizen in 1980, offered to lend Trump his copy of the Constitution. He also declared: “ You have sacrificed nothing and no one.”

Trump took offense and reacted with his usual brand of thin-skinned aggressiveness, namely suggesting that Khan’s wife, Ghazala, stood silent next to her husband during Khan’s speech because, presumably as a Muslim woman, she was prohibited from speaking. Ms. Khan has since responded that she remained silent because no words could express her grief. Mr. Khan, for his part, has declared that Trump has “a black soul.” But Trump struggled to answer Khan’s accusation that he had never sacrificed anything. “I’ve made lots of sacrifices,” Trump told ABC News. “I work very, very hard. I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, built great structures. I’ve had tremendous success. I think I’ve done a lot.” Needless to say, the Internet was not impressed. It wasn’t long before the hashtag #TrumpSacrifices started trending, with people mocking Trump’s so-called sacrifices, from “survived an entire weekend at Mar-a-Lago with just one can of hairspray” to “had to eat a taco bowl to prove I love Hispanics,” the latter referring to Trump’s clumsy attempt at winning over Latino voters by tweeting a photo of himself in front of a taco bowl on Cinco de Mayo.
