A 2014 Tweet From Donald Trump Sparks Impeachment Talk

He’s only been in office for nearly a month, but it seems that Donald Trump’s Twitter has returned to bite him again. In 2014, when President Obama was in office, Trump tweeted a suggestion to impeach the 44th President. “Are you allowed to impeach a president for gross incompetence?” Trump tweeted.

And now, people are asking the same thing about President Trump. Rumors about a potential Trump impeachment have gained steam given the controversies surrounding his short time in office. In less than one month as president, Trump’s ‘Muslim ban’ executive order was struck down in court as unconstitutional. His National Security Advisor abruptly resigned due to potential ties to Russia and lying about his communications with high-ranking Russian officials about U.S. sanctions. And then there are the president’s business ties that some fear could be conflicts of interest. “These are just tip of the iceberg examples of direct conflicts in both domestic and foreign policy under this president,” Congressman Mark Pocan said via The Nation. “Mr. President, it’s time for you to fix this. One, divest your business holding immediately to remove any suggestion of conflicts in your decision-making. Two, show us your tax returns so financial interests are transparent to the American people. And three, get rid of your unconstitutional executive order, which will make us less safe and only serve to embolden our enemies.” On February 15, the hashtag #TrumpImpeachmentParty was trending on Twitter. There is also a petition circulating online calling for his impeachment. It has reportedly reached nearly 1 million signatures, and it will be delivered to Congress as early as Thursday. The Trump impeachment is unlikely however, since Republicans control both houses of Congress. In general, impeachment proceedings to remove a president are rare. The House impeached Presidents Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, but the Senate acquitted them.
