Happy Days actress Erin Moran had been robbed of her voice in the final stages of her secret battle with throat cancer.

The former child star was found dead in her Indiana home on Saturday at the age of 56, and preliminary results from her autopsy and toxicology tests suggest she succumbed to “complications of stage four cancer.”

Moran, who had previously struggled with substance abuse issues, only told a few people of her illness, but her TV co-star and longtime friend Anson Williams had no idea how advanced the disease was. “It’s hard to wrap your arms around it,” Williams tells People. “She was having treatment for throat cancer, so I was contacting her husband and her and she seemed to be fighting it, really doing well. I was just shocked when I got the call she had passed. I had no idea it was that bad.” The actor, who played Potsie Weber on the 1970s sitcom, adds, “She kept very quiet (about her illness). We all kept quiet too, out of respect for Erin. She couldn’t speak, but her texts were very (positive).” Meanwhile, Moran’s TV brother Ron Howard admits he was unaware of her cancer struggle and is still processing the news of her death, as he is also mourning the recent passing of another loved one. “It’s been a rough time,” the actor-turned-filmmaker shared during an appearance on The Talk Monday. “My stepmother Judy passed away a couple of months ago, so the Erin event really did hit hard… I had no idea she was ill whatsoever.” Fellow co-stars Henry Winkler, Scott Baio, and Marion Ross have also expressed their sorry at Moran’s death since the news broke over the weekend.
