The Serena Slam: Tennis Star Serena Williams Wins 21st Wimbledon

Athletes, fans, and those who may not even follow sports took to Twitter the other night after tennis star Serena Williams won the 21st Wimbledon and the fourth Grand Slam of her career. The 33-year-old star took to her Twitter and Instagram to show her appreciation for her fans and their support.

Those around the globe, including  Hillary Clinton, and even author of the Harry Potter series, J. K Rowling, also logged onto their accounts to congratulate the professional tennis player.  Venus Williams typed “Another day, another Wimbledon title. Congrats!” in response to her sister’s big win. Not only is this another Williams Wimbledon win for the record books, it is also the last tournament needed to complete yet another “Serena Slam.” Also known as a Grand Slam, this is when a tennis player wins the titles from the U.S Open, the Australia Open, the French Open and Wimbledon. The player must win the four titles in one calendar year and compete in only one of the category events. This is a nearly impossible task to complete and many players can only achieve a “non-calendar year Grand Slam,” which is all four titles won, but not within a single calendar year.
This extremely difficult task has been completed by Serena Williams 4 times in her career, making the 33-year-old one of the only tennis stars to ever accomplish this. She has also won several doubles Grand Slam titles with her sister Venus, making them one of the most successful teams in professional tennis history. Williams also won an Olympic gold medal in 2012 for her abilities on the court. What makes this Grand Slam so unique is the outpouring of support via social media. “#SerenaSlam! What an athlete! What a role model!” typed author J. K. Rowling. “@serenawilliams looking calm and extremely powerful in this championship match. Get it girl!” tweeted Lindsey Vonn. Even former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, took to social media to congratulate the athlete. “@serenawilliams proves yet again: anything is possible when you work hard, dream big, and never stop reaching.” Fans were just as excited about the win, and also took to social media to express their delight and support. Scrolling through Twitter and the trending “Serena” hashtag on Saturday, July 11, anyone could see how happy fans were for their favorite tennis player. Despite this amazing feat of success, Williams does not appear to be slowing down for this next calendar year. She took to her Twitter account after her big win to poke fun at friend Andy Roddick. “I hear @andyroddick said I’m already thinking about the U.S Open 5 mins ago? Ummm Andy you are 20 mins late,” Williams typed, showing her enthusiasm and want to work even harder and achieve yet another “Serena Slam” next season. Check out a pic of Williams standing next to fellow 2015 Wimbledon champion, Novak Djokovic, at their Wimbledon Champions Dinner, captioned, “Wimbledon champions/clowns congrats @djokernole we brought back the dance! #championsdinner #Wimbledon #renasarmy I have a lot of pictures get ready!”
I guess we’ll all have to wait and see what happens with Serena Williams and what she brings to the court next season.  But when it comes to Serena Williams nothing is impossible!
