‘Suicide Squad’ Breaks August Pre-Sale Records
Suicide Squad is on course for a huge opening in America this weekend after breaking pre-sale records at top ticket site Fandango. Director David Ayer’s much-anticipated star-studded comic book blockbuster opens in cinemas on Thursday night and is expected to do big business after becoming Fandango’s biggest August pre-seller in the company’s 16-year history.
Early indications suggest it will eclipse 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and last year’s Straight Outta Compton in total advance ticket sales prior to release. “Suicide Squad is one of the year’s most anticipated movies,” says Fandango managing editor Erik Davis, “not just for its all-star ensemble, led by Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, but because it serves up something uniquely inventive with its all-villain roster. Audiences are always looking for something special, especially before the summer ends, and Suicide Squad is that ‘it’ movie that everyone will be talking about.” That’s good news for studio bosses following a spate of poor reviews for the movie. The critics have been so scathing, Ayer has taken to Twitter to defend his new film – about a group of super criminals on a mission to do good. “Prefiero morir de pie que vivir de rodillas – Emiliano Zapata,” he wrote, sharing a quote from the Mexican revolutionary in Spanish, which translates as: “I’d prefer to die standing, than to live always on my knees.” “Zapata quote is my way of saying I love the movie and believe in it. Made it for the fans. Best experience of my life,” he added. The film also features Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis and Joel Kinnaman.
