R.I.P American Idol
It’s the end of an era!!! After its upcoming 15th season, Fox has decided to pull the plug on the once king of all reality shows, American Idol. While this might not come as a shock to most, it’s still a major development in American TV history! Idol will be back for its final/farewell season in January, featuring host, Ryan Seacrest, and Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr. there to judge the last contestants ever to have the opportunity to try out!
The show was once a ratings phenomenon, brining in more that 30 million viewers a season, at its height, but sadly things have changed. Ratings have been badly declining, with only 10 million viewers tuning in last season, and just 9 million this current season, completely bumping the show of Fox’s list of top rated programs – a sad reality, considering it was once the top rated show on television for eight consecutive years! Things slowly started changing for Idol after its ninth season, when one of its original stars, Simon Cowell, left to launch an American version of another reality competition show, The X-Factor, which interestingly enough would also be featured on Fox. At the same time, NBC found its way into the game, coming out with its own music competition show, The Voice, also featuring a slew of highly worshiped celebrity judges. With all the competition, Idol slowly lost it’s allure and never really found a way to pick itself back up. While saying good bye is never easy, we’ll never forget the amazing talent that American Idol has brought into our lives. Some of our most beloved stars like Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, Jordin Sparks, and Taylor Hicks (to name a few) are Idol alums who really owe their careers to the show. And the can be said for Ryan Seacrest, who became a household name thanks to Idol. “‘American Idol’ has been a big part of my life for so long, it’s frankly hard to imagine it without it,” said Seacrest in a statement. “It’s been a remarkable journey, and I feel very fortunate to have been part of a show that made television history in countless ways. It’s a show about chasing and fulfilling dreams, and truth be told, it helped some of my own dreams come true too.”
