Queen Did Not Authorize Donald Trump’s Use of ‘We Are The Champions’

Rockers Queen have criticized presidential candidate Donald Trump for using their “We Are the Champions” hit without permission at the Republican National Convention on Monday.

The billionaire business mogul used the famous 1977 track as his entrance music as he appeared onstage at the political event in Cleveland, Ohio – a month after guitarist Brian May blasted Trump for playing the anthem at another campaign stop after becoming the presumptive presidential nominee of the U.S. Republican Party.

At the time, May insisted the use of “We Are the Champions” had not been approved by the band, and it appears Trump and his team failed to obtain proper authorization to blast it at Monday’s gathering, too. After the event, the surviving members of the group took to social media, writing, “An unauthorized use at the Republican Convention against our wishes.” A representative for Sony Music ATV, which owns publishing rights to the tune, also tells TMZ the 70-year-old real estate tycoon-turned-politician never asked and was never granted permission to play the song. Trump’s use of the rock classic first hit headlines last month, when May revealed the band had been inundated with irate messages about the tune’s new political association. “I’ve had an avalanche of complaints – some of which you can see in our ‘Letters’ page – about Donald Trump using our “We Are The Champions” track as his ‘theme’ song on USA TV,” May wrote on his website. “This is not an official Queen statement, but I can confirm that permission to use the track was neither sought nor given.” “We are taking advice on what steps we can take to ensure this use does not continue. Regardless of our views on Mr. Trump’s platform, it has always been against our policy to allow Queen music to be used as a political campaigning tool.” Trump’s representatives have yet to respond to the new controversy.
