While Southern California and the rest of the United States was still reeling from the mass shooting in San Bernardino Wednesday, the New York Daily News decided it was time to take certain politicians to task. In an unusual move, the newspaper revealed their morning cover and it quickly went viral.
With the headline boldly spelling out “God Isn’t Fixing This,” surrounded by tweets by Republican presidential candidates offering “prayers” in the wake of this latest tragedy, the Daily News let the world know where the blame should lay.
“As latest batch of innocent Americans are left lying in pools of blood, cowards who could truly end gun scourge continue to hide behind meaningless platitudes,” the cover reads.
The provocative cover called out candidates Ted Cruz (R-TX), Dr. Rand Paul (R-KY), Paul Ryan (R-WI), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) for their lack of action, saying prayers are not enough to stop the bloodshed, which seems to have become so routine in the United States.
As if to underscore that this has become the new normal in the United States, the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) began their coverage of the San Bernardino shooting by saying, “Just another day in the United States of America, another day of gunfire, panic, and fear.”
Yesterday’s two mass shootings (another one occurred earlier in the morning in Georgia killing one and injuring three others) brings the total number of mass shootings this year to 355. That statistic means there have been more mass shootings, which are defined as an incident where four or more people are killed or injured by gunfire, than days in the calendar year (336).
Of course not everyone was pleased with the Daily News’ cover. Twitter exploded with rage at the idea of #PrayerShaming.
'Delightfully partisan & inflammatory': NY Daily News cover takes 'prayer shaming' 2 whole new level https://t.co/Z9yq2PKb8j #PrayerShaming

Really upset to see all the #PrayerShaming on social media following the #SanBernadinoShooting. Is now really the time to insult faith?

Democratic presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, shared their views on Twitter, tweeting that they see action as the most likely step to curb this increasing gun violence.
I refuse to accept this as normal. We must take action to stop gun violence now. -H https://t.co/SkKglwQycb

Mass shootings are becoming an almost-everyday occurrence in this country. This sickening and senseless gun violence must stop.
