Mother of 8 on Welfare Says Sexism Is Making It Hard to Find Work

Being a single parent is tough. For a variety of reasons, a person might find themselves alone raising any number of children. Those reasons can be highly legitimate, stemming from the loss of a loved one or irreconcilable differences in a relationship, but it usually results in the single parent struggling financially and needing assistance, often from government welfare. One mother of eight on welfare is making headlines and drawing ire from taxpayers for her reasons why she can’t find work. Marie Buchan of Birmingham, England has eight children, ages 3 to 15 years old. Buchan has been given the nickname “Octomum” in the tabloids in England for her shocking reason why she can’t get out of the welfare system. Buchan receives about £26,000 (or $30,000 USD) annually from the government, but claims that she can’t find work because she’s just too pretty for her profession.
What profession could that be, you’re asking yourself now? Buchan is an auto mechanic, but claims the “boy’s club” mentality of the industry has held her back. Buchan has claimed that despite her best efforts to succeed as a legitimate mechanic, she’s viewed only as a sex object. According to Boredom Therapy, Buchan claims to have chosen the profession precisely to work against this perceived sexism, but has been unable to make much progress so far. While searching for a job as a mechanic, Buchan reportedly took a job as a part-time personal support worker. Buchan didn’t like the work and didn’t continue doing it for long. During interviews, Buchan admitted to working just 16 hours per week in order to be able to continue collecting welfare benefits, a fact that angered viewers. Buchan claimed the money she was making was enough to get her off welfare, but not enough to cover the costs of lunch money for her kids every day, so it was better to quit that job rather than struggle buying food for her kids. Buchan had also reportedly worked as a stripper and had breast augmentation surgery. She claimed her boyfriend paid for the surgery and the welfare money was not spent on the procedure, but many viewed this as just another example of Buchan’s lackadaisical attitude toward finding a good full-time job. The mother of eight says she is trying her hardest to become a full-time auto mechanic and do everything she can to get off government assistance but has simply been unsuccessful. What do you think? Do you think she should keep trying to fulfill her dream of being an auto mechanic, or should she be looking to get any job she can? SHARE this post with your friends and let them know how you feel.
