This Man Lived in an Animal Shelter for 48 Hours to Raise Awareness About Shelter Pets
Cats and dogs are great to hang out with, but could you spend a full 48 hours living just like them? That’s exactly what Rob Morlino did to raise money for New Mexico’s Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society. Morlino spent two days living with the animals in the shelter’s kennels and broadcasted his entire experience on Facebook. During this process, Morlino hoped to raise awareness about homeless pets.
“Rob’s a great sport who is really passionate about saving homeless animals,” the shelter’s director of growth, Evelyn Viechec, shared with the Santa Fe New Mexican. “Not many people would be willing to go to such lengths to tell our story or to humiliate himself in such a way.” While Morlino was living in the kennel he went on walks with the dogs and shared a living space with them. He also conducted and held interviews with other workers in the shelter and painted some portraits of the animals. During his stay, Morlino was surprised to learn just how quiet it can become in the kennel. “It was almost spookily quiet,” he told the Huffington Post. The shelter was able to hit its’ goal and raise $10,000 by the end of Morlino’s project. According to the ASPCA, 7.6 million animals go into a shelter each year. However, only 2.7 million animals are adopted and leave the shelter, which makes Morlino’s project that much more important. “Everyone’s been so generous and the experience has restored our faith in humanity,” the shelter told A Plus. “Our faith in animals has never faltered. Thank you all so much.”
