Leslie Jones Returns to Twitter
Actress Leslie Jones has returned to Twitter, just three days after quitting the social media site over unrelenting racial abuse. The comedy star, 48, hit headlines on Monday after she shared the “personal hell” she had been suffering at the hands of cyber bullies, who had bombarded her with highly-offensive and racist messages online surrounding the release of her new movie, an all-female reboot of 1984 classic Ghostbusters.
After telling followers of some of the vile messages she had received, she admitted she felt “numb” by all of the hate mail, and went on to declare she had had enough. As she bid farewell to fans online, she wrote, “I feel like I’m in a personal hell. I didn’t do anything to deserve this. It’s just too much. It shouldn’t be like this. So hurt right now. I leave Twitter tonight with tears and a very sad heart. All this cause I did a movie. You can hate the movie but the s**t I got today…wrong.” A number of celebrity friends and fans, including model Chrissy Teigen and original Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd, spoke out in support of Jones, while Twitter bosses took their own action by banning one reporter the actress had accused of inciting the racial hatred. However, Jones couldn’t stay away from Twitter for too long, as she logged back online on Thursday. “Welp…a b**ch thought she could stay away,” she wrote as she returned to the site. “But who else is gonna live tweet Game of Thrones!!” She then went on to thank her followers, posting, “Thanks for the love and support I received! made me feel real special.” Jones, who has garnered thousands more followers after the debacle, also added the hashtag “#LoveForLeslieJ,” which began trending on Twitter on Monday as fans flooded the site with messages of support.
