Karen Gillan’s Nebula Was Killed Off in Original ‘Guardians’ Script
Actress Karen Gillan is thankful to still be a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise because her villainous character Nebula was killed off in the first movie’s original script.
The Scottish star reprises her role as the alien baddie in the blockbuster’s new sequel, but she wouldn’t still have the Marvel gig if screenwriters had stuck to their initial plot for the 2014 release. “There was a point where Nebula actually died in the first movie,” the actress told ScreenCrush.com. “I thought, ‘OK, so that’s going to be it for her,’ at one point. Then suddenly they rewrote her ending — and then they rewrote it again, and I was like, ‘Oh, OK. What’s going on?'” Nebula, sister to Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, was instead kept alive and her character plays a key role in the follow-up, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Gillan continued, “I was really shocked when I got to come back as part of the team in the next movie. That was amazing! I definitely didn’t expect that.” Now the former Doctor Who star is eager to expand Nebula’s story even further with a potential spin-off movie. Asked for her thoughts on the idea, she smiles to British news website Digital Spy: “I mean, that would be amazing, that would be the dream. We’ve never spoken about it though – maybe I’ll casually bring it up… (to filmmaker James Gunn).” Gunn recently announced he will return to write and direct a third installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy universe. “My love for (characters) Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, Yondu, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula – and some of the other forthcoming heroes — goes deeper than you guys can possibly imagine,” he explained in a post on Facebook, “and I feel they have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit.” Gunn’s sequel news was released on April 17, just over a week before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 began rolling out in cinemas. The movie, which stars Chris Pratt as lead character Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, opens in the U.S. on May 5.
