Desperate Father Robbed A Bank To Pay For His Daughter’s Cancer Treatments
News| | By Jason Owen
A 23-year-old man, Brian Randolph, who was arrested on Aug. 14 for robbing a bank says he committed the crime to help save his daughter’s life. His daughter, one-year-old Brailynn Randolph, had her insurance abruptly cancelled earlier this month. Little Brailynn suffers from a form of eye cancer, called retinoblastoma.
Without insurance, Randolph had no way to afford the chemo payments. Out of desperation, he resorted to drastic measures. On Aug. 12, Randolph robbed a South Lyon, Michigan, Vibe Credit Union. Police finally caught up with Randolph two days later. “I’m not sure what he was thinking at that point, but at the end of the day the only thing I can think about is him trying to take care of his child,” Randolph’s girlfriend told 7 Action News. Randolph was set to appear back in court Wednesday, but his outlook is uncertain. “He just asked me, ‘When am I gonna get out of here?’ I said you may not get out of here,” said Karri Mitchell, Randolph’s attorney. Meanwhile, Randolph’s girlfriend is working with the insurance company to try to get young Brailynn’s insurance reinstated. Last year, after the diagnosis, Brailynn’s mother set up a GoFunMe page. Of the $5,500 campaign goal, the family has raised an amazing $9,677. For Randolph, though he knows he did wrong, it was all for his family. “The only thing he kept telling me,” Randolph’s aunt told 7 Action News, “is I want to be the man I’m supposed to be. I want to provide for my child.”
